Italy Opposes EU Sanctions on Israel, Advocates Dialogue: Tajani

Brussels: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Monday that Italy is opposed to Spain’s proposal for the European Union to terminate agreements with Israel and impose sanctions. This discussion took place during the foreign affairs council meeting in Brussels.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani emphasized Italy’s differing stance, highlighting the importance of maintaining dialogue with Israel. He noted that through diplomatic conversations, Italy successfully facilitated the evacuation of nearly 1,000 individuals from the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, Italy was instrumental in allowing a UN convoy to enter Gaza, a feat not achieved by others.

Tajani argued that open dialogue is essential for progress and criticized unrealistic positions that seem to be influenced by internal political agendas. He reiterated Italy’s commitment to working with Israel, despite disapproving of certain actions in Gaza, particularly concerning the disproportionate use of force. Tajani called for an immediate ceasefire and clarified that Italy supports sanctions against settlers in the West Bank who have violated regulations. However, he warned that severing ties with Israel could hinder opportunities for Palestinians to leave Gaza.
