Tajani Says Opposition Assault Failed, Govt Strengthened

Rome: The opposition’s assault on the government has failed and the government has been strengthened by the failure of five referenda on labour and citizenship rights to reach a quorum, Deputy Premier, Foreign Minister and centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party leader Antonio Tajani said Monday. “First of all, great respect for those who went to vote because it is always a form of participation in the referendum,” Tajani told Tg1.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani remarked that the recent referenda served as a strategic attempt by the opposition to challenge the government. The failure of these referenda, which did not meet the required quorum, has been interpreted as a setback for the Left and the opposition. Tajani emphasized that the government’s position has been reinforced as a result of this outcome, while the opposition has suffered a weakening blow.

Tajani further expressed the need for reform in the rules governing referenda. He suggested that the process should be made more stringent to prevent unnecessary expenses. One of his proposals includes increasing the number of signatures required to initiate referenda, pointing out the high cost associated with such democratic exercises.
