Tajani Opposes Tax Increase on Short-Term Rentals Amid Budget Debate

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced Thursday that his centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party is against the proposed increase in tax on short-term rentals included in the government’s budget bill. Tajani stated that the party intends to reverse this decision as the legislation progresses through parliament.

According to Ansa News Agency, the budget bill proposes raising the tax rate from 21% to 26% on income from the first short-term rental property if owners use online platforms like Airbnb to attract customers. The tax for income from additional properties was already set at 26%.

Tajani emphasized the party’s stance, saying, “We are opposed to any new tax and now we will do everything in parliament to return to the current state of affairs, that is, no tax for those who rent without an intermediary or with the platforms.” He confirmed that amendments would be introduced, starting in the Senate, to remove the proposed tax increase.
