Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has asserted that the Italian government will remain in office until the end of its mandate, dismissing any notions of internal divisions within the ruling coalition. Speaking on the fringes of the national assembly of the centrist Noi Moderati, Tajani, who leads the center-right Forza Italia (FI) party, emphasized the importance of differing opinions among coalition members.
According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani stated, “An idea is not a division – an idea is an idea,” underscoring that having different opinions is both normal and constructive. He further assured that these differing perspectives are collectively synthesized to uphold the government’s program, which has consistently garnered support. Tajani reiterated, “Nobody should harbour the illusion that there are deep divisions within this cabinet.”
Tajani’s remarks aim to quell any speculation about discord within the coalition, which comprises Forza Italia, the right-wing League party led by
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, and the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, led by Italy’s first female premier, Giorgia Meloni. Their coalition achieved a decisive victory in the September 2022 general election.
Despite occasional tensions between Forza Italia and the League, particularly after Forza Italia surpassed the League in opinion polls, Tajani insists that these do not translate into fundamental rifts. The League’s underperformance in recent regional elections in Liguria, Umbria, and Emilia-Romagna has been a point of contention. However, Tajani concluded by stating, “It is useless to try to find divisions that don’t exist,” reinforcing the coalition’s commitment to its legislative agenda.
