Tajani Calls for Immediate Ukraine Ceasefire and EU Involvement in Peace Talks

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and the involvement of the European Union and Kyiv in peace talks ahead of the upcoming summit in Alaska between United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani expressed his support for Trump’s initiative, describing it as a positive step towards peace. He emphasized the importance of including Kyiv in any agreement, stating that peace cannot be achieved without the direct involvement of both Russian and Ukrainian parties. Tajani highlighted a joint declaration signed by Italy and EU heads of state, underscoring that peace is unattainable without Ukraine’s participation.

Tajani reiterated the EU’s role as a key player in the negotiations, noting that it has imposed sanctions on Russia and views the war in Ukraine as a security issue. He outlined the primary objectives as achieving a ceasefire and supporting the Ukrainian civilian populati
on. He stressed that peace cannot equate to Ukraine’s surrender, emphasizing respect for international law and continued support for Ukraine’s interests.

Responding to questions about differing stances within the Italian government, Tajani stated that foreign policy is directed by himself and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, maintaining a clear government line. He also addressed the ongoing conflict involving Israel, advocating for a halt to hostilities and support for humanitarian efforts.

Tajani discussed sanctions on West Bank settlers and measures taken to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers in Gaza. He also touched on the recognition of Palestine, asserting that while Italy is in favor, recognition cannot occur until a state is formed. He mentioned the potential impact of tariffs on Italian products in the US market, noting that such measures could enhance competitiveness if tariffs on other countries are higher.
