Tajani Aims to Resolve Tensions Between Salvini and Macron

Rome: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has stepped in to address a diplomatic dispute between Italy and France. The tension arose after remarks made by Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini against French President Emmanuel Macron regarding France’s potential deployment of troops to Ukraine as part of a multinational peacekeeping effort.

According to Ansa News Agency, France summoned Italy’s ambassador to express dissatisfaction with Salvini’s comments, labeling them as “unacceptable.” Salvini, leader of the rightwing League party, had criticized Macron, suggesting that if the French president wished to send troops to Ukraine, he should personally lead the charge. Salvini further defended his remarks, accusing Macron of being “touchy” due to low approval ratings in France.

Tajani emphasized that Salvini’s statements should not strain Franco-Italian relations, clarifying that foreign policy is determined by the foreign minister and the prime minister. Premier Giorgia Meloni has consistently opposed Italy’s involvement in a French and UK-led coalition to oversee a potential Ukraine peace agreement, advocating instead for a NATO-like security guarantee for Ukraine.

This security concept, akin to NATO’s Article 5, would ensure collective defense against future aggression. Article 5, a key principle of NATO, has only been invoked once, following the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Deputy Foreign Minister Edmondo Cirielli, a senior figure in Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, commented in Corriere della Sera that the incident should be downplayed. Cirielli noted that Tajani’s intervention highlighted Italy’s stance and suggested that the situation would have been more serious had Meloni made such remarks, downplaying the scenario as a diplomatic crisis.
