Tajani Advocates for a Stronger European Union Amidst Internal Political Differences

Florence: Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized the necessity of constructing a stronger European Union in the current international climate, rather than dismantling it. Tajani’s statement was made during an event organized by his centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party in Florence, ahead of the European People’s Party (EPP) congress. He highlighted the importance of building a unified Europe to protect the interests of its half a billion citizens.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani’s pro-European Union stance often contrasts with the views of fellow Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, who leads the League party. Salvini’s Euroscepticism has been evident in his recent criticism of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s ReArm Europe plan, a proposal that Tajani supports.

During the event, Tajani expressed confidence in Forza Italia’s position in Italian politics, stating, “Forza Italia is in excellent health. We are the third biggest party in Italy, the
second biggest in the centre-right. We are loyal to the government, but we will never give up our ideas, we will not bend down when it comes to defending our values.” His remarks underscore the internal political dynamics within Italy’s centre-right coalition and the broader European political landscape.
