Swimming Worlds: Martinenghi Wins Silver in 100 Breaststroke Despite Illness
Rome: Italy’s Nicol² Martinenghi captured the silver medal in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the World Swimming Championships, showcasing resilience and determination despite battling illness before the race.
According to Ansa News Agency, Qin Haiyang took the gold medal, while Kyrgyzstan’s Denis Petrashov rounded out the podium with a bronze. Martinenghi’s performance was particularly notable given his health struggles leading up to the event. The Olympic champion revealed to Rai Sport that he had considered withdrawing from the competition due to spending the night before the race in discomfort, possibly due to food poisoning.
Despite these challenges, Martinenghi expressed pride in representing Italy and satisfaction with his silver medal performance. “I could have done even better, but I’m still very happy,” he stated, acknowledging the hard work and dedication that propelled him to compete. He emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity to showcase his abilities on the world stage, even under less than ideal conditions.
In addition to Martinenghi’s silver medal, another Italian swimmer, Ludovico Viberti, qualified for the final and finished in sixth place, demonstrating the depth of talent in Italy’s swimming team. On Sunday, the Italian team of Carlos D’Ambrosio, Thomas Ceccon, Lorenzo Zazzeri, and Manuel Frigo also earned a silver medal in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay, further highlighting Italy’s strong performance at the championships in Singapore.
