Sport as a School of Democracy, Velasco Tells Mattarella

Rome: Julio Velasco, coach of Italy’s world champion women’s volleyball team, addressed President Sergio Mattarella at a Quirinale reception for Italy’s successful men’s and women’s volleyball teams. Velasco emphasized that sport serves as a school for democracy.

According to Ansa News Agency, Velasco conveyed that, in an era marked by increasing division, sport can play a role in fostering democratic values, encouraging acceptance of diverse ideas, and promoting coexistence amid diversity. He expressed gratitude to President Mattarella for the recognition and highlighted that the women’s national volleyball team serves as a model to be admired for its diversity and ability to succeed without compromising individual identities.

Velasco expressed his honor at being received by President Mattarella, stating that such a reception signifies acknowledgment by the entire nation. He articulated the role of sport in advocating for a democratic culture during times of heightened divisions. Velasco acknowledged that
while victories are not always guaranteed, the team’s perseverance and performance, especially during challenging moments like those at the World Cup, have earned them recognition beyond just their triumphs.

The coach highlighted the cultural diversity within the team, mentioning members with origins from countries such as Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Germany, and Russia.
