Soccer: Inter Have to ‘Build on Munich Win’ Says Inzaghi

Rome: Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said his men cannot rest on their laurels after beating Bayern Munich 2-1 in Germany in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday. Lautaro Martinez finished off a fine move for the opening goal in the first half and Davide Frattesi scored the winner in the closing stages, shortly after Thomas Mueller had equalized for Bayern, to hand the German giants their first home defeat in the Champions League since 2021.

According to Ansa News Agency, Inzaghi emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum following the impressive victory. “We went toe to toe with Bayern, showing determination and courage,” said Inzaghi, whose side are aiming for a treble as they are top of Serie A and in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup. He acknowledged the significance of the result, stating, “It’s a top-level result that makes us happy.”

Inzaghi also highlighted the exceptional nature of Bayern’s record, saying, “Bayern’s numbers are incredible, so we’ve achieved something
important.” Despite the victory, he urged his team to focus on the upcoming match, “However, we need to build on this performance in front of our fans in seven days’ time.”

Reflecting on the match, Inzaghi noted, “I expected more pressing from them, but they came up against an Inter side who played well.” He praised his team’s ability to score two goals after building from the back and moving the ball effectively. He concluded by expressing confidence in his team’s resilience, stating, “We never stopped believing we could win despite conceding an equaliser.”
