Sinner Discusses Game Adjustments Ahead of Shanghai Masters

Shanghai: Jannik Sinner expressed that he is not the only tennis player making changes to his game during a press conference on Thursday, ahead of the Shanghai Masters. This comes after his recent victory in Beijing, following a defeat at the US Open to his rival Carlos Alcaraz.

According to Ansa News Agency, Sinner, a 24-year-old four-time major winner and former world number one, has had limited time to recuperate since his win against American Learner Tien in Beijing. Despite this, he appeared composed and ready as he arrived in Shanghai, where he aims to defend the title he secured last year. The South Tyrolean champion acknowledged the challenges posed by the humid conditions in Shanghai compared to Beijing but remained hopeful about delivering a strong performance against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.

Sinner emphasized that adjusting one’s game is a common practice among players, stating, “If you ask any player, they all try to change something and improve.” Reflecting on his performance in Beijing, where he successfully saved 21 of 26 break points, Sinner noted that he focuses on making the best decisions during matches rather than dwelling on statistics. He also highlighted the importance of pushing himself to the limit and learning from mistakes.

With the possibility of briefly reclaiming the world number one ranking by winning in Shanghai and the subsequent tournament in Vienna, Sinner remains focused on his performance. Meanwhile, the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew from the Shanghai Masters citing the need for rest, has sparked discussions about the demanding tennis schedule, a topic also addressed by players like Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff.

Italian players Matteo Arnaldi and Jasmine Paolini have had mixed results in the tournament, with Arnaldi advancing to the second round and Paolini being eliminated in Beijing.
