Seven in 10 Women in Italy Fear Returning Home at Night: Censis Report

Rome: Almost seven in 10 women in Italy, specifically 67.3%, experience fear when returning home in the evening or at night, as highlighted by a new report from research institute Censis.

According to Ansa News Agency, the report reveals that 81.8% of women in Italy believe that walking the streets has become more dangerous over the past five years, compared to 75.8% of Italians of both sexes who share this view. The ‘Safety Outside the Home’ report indicates a rise in several crimes predominantly committed against women.

The report highlights an increase in cases of sexual violence, totaling 6,587 in 2024, marking a 34.9% rise over the last five years. Additionally, 25.6% of women surveyed reported experiencing at least one sexual assault, 23.1% faced mugging or pickpocketing, and 29.5% had been followed by a stranger.
