Search Underway for 40 Missing Migrants After Shipwreck in Strait of Sicily
Lampedusa: Italian rescue vessels continued their efforts on Wednesday to locate 40 individuals reported missing following a shipwreck in the Strait of Sicily, off the Tunisian coast. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a migrant boat capsized during its perilous journey.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Italian Coast Guard and finance police patrol boats managed to rescue 10 survivors from a partially submerged dinghy, transporting them safely to the island of Lampedusa. In a somber development, rescuers also recovered six bodies from the site of the wreck.
The survivors recounted their harrowing experience, revealing that they had set sail from Sfax, Tunisia, in a rubber dinghy carrying 56 people on Sunday night. The crossing turned disastrous as many migrants fell into the water due to rough sea conditions. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities strive to locate and assist any remaining survivors.
