Schlein’s Mud on Ranucci: Italy Pays for It Says Meloni

Rome: Centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein threw “mud” when she said freedom was at risk in the country amid moves against journalists like Rai investigative show presenter Sigfrido Ranucci, who suffered a bomb attack last Thursday night, Premier Giorgia Meloni stated. Meloni emphasized that Italy “paid” for such statements.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni addressed the House, highlighting Schlein’s comments made in an international context. Schlein allegedly accused or compared the Italian government to terrorists, stating that freedom and democracy were at risk in Italy due to the far-right governance. Schlein subtly linked these statements to the attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Meloni also referenced her own characterization of the Left as being more fundamentalist than Hamas for not supporting the Gaza peace plan signed by Hamas.

Meloni further criticized Schlein, suggesting that accusations of her being complicit in various issues, such as the migrant deaths at sea and genocide in Gaza, were baseless. She questioned Schlein’s insinuations of Meloni being complicit or an instigator in the attack on Ranucci and urged the Democratic Party leader to clarify her statements. Meloni argued that these claims cast a shadow on Italy, its democracy, and the elected majority, warning that “Italy risks paying for this.”

Meloni questioned Schlein’s motivations for spreading such narratives abroad, especially when the claims were untrue. She argued that such actions would not aid in governance over a prosperous nation but rather create unnecessary opposition. Schlein made her remarks about the risks to freedom and democracy in Italy at a recent European Socialists meeting in Brussels, where she also mentioned the one-kilo bomb that destroyed Ranucci’s and his daughter’s cars at their home south of Rome.
