Schlein Challenges Meloni on Israel Condemnation Amidst Protest Clashes

Rome: Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein expressed her willingness to heed Premier Giorgia Meloni’s call for condemnation of the violence during protests across Italy concerning the Gaza situation. However, Schlein emphasized that the government should also condemn actions by Israel.

According to Ansa News Agency, Schlein addressed her centre-left opposition party, stating her satisfaction with the largely peaceful protests on Monday. She urged the government to cease criminalizing dissent, asserting that Italy should not be seen as complicit in the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Schlein further remarked on Meloni’s recent call for a denouncement of street violence, reiterating her party’s consistent stance against violence. Schlein concluded by awaiting a similar condemnation from Meloni regarding Netanyahu’s actions.
