Schlein Accuses Meloni of Dividing Nation Over Flotilla Remarks

Rome: Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein on Thursday criticized Premier Giorgia Meloni, accusing her of playing the victim following Meloni’s remarks that labeled the Global Sumud Flotilla as irresponsible and a potential problem for the government.

According to Ansa News Agency, Schlein expressed her disapproval in the Lower House after Defence Minister Guido Crosetto reported on the recent attack on the flotilla. She questioned Meloni’s perspective, stating, “So the Flotilla is an act of spite to you and to the government? Stop being a megalomaniac.” Schlein highlighted the presence of delegations from 44 different countries in the flotilla, which she argued was not an act of hostility but rather a significant international initiative.

In her address, Schlein also accused Meloni of insulting the opposition, alleging that the premier has been “playing the victim for three years” and has been “dividing the nation.” Schlein’s critique extended to the government’s stance on the recognition of the State of Palestine. She challenged the government by asking, “what are you waiting for?” in recognizing Palestine.

Premier Meloni has previously stated that Italy will only recognize Palestine if Israeli hostages are released and Hamas is removed from Gaza.
