Sanctions on Francesca Albanese Viewed as an Attack on United Nations

Rome: Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Palestinians, stated on Thursday that the sanctions imposed on her by the United States for her reports on the situation in the occupied territories go beyond personal impact, affecting the people around her and the UN itself.

According to Ansa News Agency, Albanese revealed during a press conference at the Senate, organized by the Green-Left Alliance (AVS), that she is accused of being a threat to the global economy. This accusation led to an executive order by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, under which individuals who engage with her, especially in financial matters, could face criminal and monetary penalties amounting to up to $1 billion and 20 years in prison.

Albanese highlighted the broad implications of these sanctions, explaining that even her daughter could technically be liable for arrest for something as simple as buying her a coffee. She described the resulting environment as frosty, not due to mistrust, but because of the intimidating stance taken by the US administration.

The sanctions also extend to the International Criminal Court, which the US administration has accused of endangering its interests, a claim Albanese deems absurd. She concluded her remarks by stating that the attack on her is, in essence, an attack on the United Nations, underscoring the broader implications of these actions.
