Salvini-Orban Meeting Sparks Clarification on Italy’s Foreign Policy Roles
Rome: Italy’s foreign policy is the responsibility of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Premier Giorgia Meloni, Deputy Premier Tajani stated. This clarification came after Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini’s recent meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who advocated for creating an anti-Ukraine bloc.
According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani leads the centre-right post-Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party, aligning with the European People’s Party in the European Parliament. In contrast, Salvini’s League party is part of the Patriots for Europe group, which includes Orban’s Fidesz, Alternative for Germany (AfD), Poland’s Law and Justice party, the Austrian and Dutch Freedom Parties, France’s National Rally, and Spain’s Vox, among other national-conservative parties.
Tajani reiterated that Italy’s foreign policy is articulated by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister. He clarified that while individual positions may exist, the government’s political line is unambiguous, explicitly stating, “we are on Kyiv’s side.”
