Salvini Criticizes Brussels Over Imposed Tariffs on Italy

Ancona: Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini on Saturday criticized the European Union for imposing tariffs that he claims have damaged entire sectors in Italy and Europe. Speaking at an event organized by the right-wing League party in Ancona, Salvini emphasized that these tariffs were the only ones that have had such a detrimental impact.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini addressed concerns regarding United States President Donald Trump’s announced tariffs on European goods. He stressed the importance of directly engaging with Trump and the United States to prevent potential harm to the Italian economy, rather than relying on intermediaries such as French President Emmanuel Macron or European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Salvini pointed out that President Trump has a history of using tariff threats as leverage to secure economic and commercial agreements. He suggested that Italy should adopt a similar approach by working directly with Trump to safeguard its economic interests.

Salvini reiterated that, despite Trump’s threats, the most significant tariff impacting business sectors in Italy and Europe was imposed by Brussels, not the United States. His comments highlight ongoing tensions between Italy and the European Union regarding trade policies and their effects on national economies.
