New Campi Flegrei Quake Rocks Naples Area

Naples: A new earthquake of magnitude 3.9 in the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera shook the Naples area on Saturday. The quake struck at 13:32, following a recent earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on Thursday, which was one of the most significant tremors in the area in the last 40 years, matching the magnitude of another quake that occurred in May last year.

According to Ansa News Agency, the Campi Flegrei area, also known as the Phlegrean Fields, is currently experiencing bradyseism, a phenomenon involving ground uplift, which has led to a series of earthquakes over the past year. This geological activity has prompted concerns about the safety and stability of the region.

In response to the ongoing seismic activity, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci has appointed a special commissioner for the Campi Flegrei area. The commissioner’s role will focus on implementing risk-prevention measures to safeguard the residents and infrastructure in the region. The minister has also voiced concerns about the historical urban development that has been allowed in the volcanic area over the decades, highlighting the potential risk it poses amidst the current geological situation.
