Salvini and Orb¡n Criticize EU Policies During Rome Meeting

Rome: Right-wing League party leader, Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb¡n in Rome on Tuesday. The leaders, both part of the national-conservative Patriots for Europe caucus at the European Parliament, discussed peace and criticized the European Union’s Green Deal and other policies they described as “suicidal.”

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini and Orb¡n’s meeting lasted an hour and focused on international infrastructure and geopolitical balances. It was described as an “affectionate meeting” by the staff of the Deputy Prime Minister and League party leader. The discussion included topics such as peace and a shared opposition to EU policies perceived as detrimental to their national interests.

The leaders expressed their agreement on the need to combat illegal immigration. During the meeting, Salvini and Orb¡n took a moment to view the model of the Messina Strait Bridge, a significant infrastructure project located at the entrance of the Ministry. Salvini extended an invitation to Orb¡n to attend the commencement of the bridge’s construction, which has garnered international attention and curiosity.

The League and Orb¡n’s Fidesz party are aligned with several other nationalist parties across Europe, including Germany’s AfD, Poland’s Law and Justice party, France’s National Rally, and others, under the Patriots for Europe caucus. Their unified stance against certain EU policies highlights the ongoing tensions within the European Union regarding its future direction and policy initiatives.
