Sal² Revokes Mussolini’s Honorary Citizenship

Sal²: The city council of Sal², the northern Italian city historically linked to Benito Mussolini’s Fascist German-puppet Italian Social Republic (RSI), has officially revoked his honorary citizenship. This decision marks a significant step in the city’s distancing from its controversial past.

According to Ansa News Agency, the motion to strip Mussolini of the honor was presented by Tiberio Evoli, a member of the centre-left municipal majority. The motion received support from twelve councillors who voted in favor. However, opposition was noted with three councillors voting against the motion, and one abstaining. These councillors were from civic lists, including one affiliated with the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party.

Francesco Cagnini, the 29-year-old mayor of Sal², emphasized the city’s current stance, stating, “In today’s Italy there is no room anymore for his ideas.” This decision follows two previous rejections of similar petitions to revoke Mussolini’s citizenship. The honorary citizenship was originally granted to the Fascist dictator in May 1924.
