Russian Embassy Condemns Italian Sports Minister for Alleged ‘Double Standards’
Rome: The Russian embassy in Italy has issued a strong critique of Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, accusing him of “double standards” concerning international sports bans. The embassy’s comments come after Abodi ruled out a ban for Israel while supporting Russia’s exclusion due to its military actions in Ukraine.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Russian Embassy took to its Facebook account to express dissatisfaction with Abodi’s recent statements at the Rimini Meeting of Comunione e Liberazione (CL), a prominent Catholic activist group. The embassy urged Italian authorities to avoid making declarations that could misrepresent their responsibilities, particularly those of officials involved in Olympic preparations.
The embassy’s post highlighted Abodi’s remarks against excluding Israeli athletes from international competitions, contrasting them with his support for Russia’s exclusion. Abodi justified the ban on Russia by labeling its actions as more “bloody” than those of Israel against Palestinians. The embassy cited this stance as a quintessential example of the perceived ‘double standards’ by Western officials.
