Rome Embarks on Project to Make Tiber River Swimmable in Five Years

Rome: Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri announced a new initiative aimed at reducing pollution levels in the River Tiber, with the goal of making it swimmable within five years. The project was unveiled during an event at the Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, focusing on the future of the Eternal City.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mayor Gualtieri has already set up a working group that will soon include multiple institutions. The mayor has had discussions with Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Lazio President Francesco Rocca to collaborate with the government and the region on necessary investments.

Gualtieri expressed confidence in the project’s feasibility, stating that within five years, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy swimming in the Tiber. He noted that the cost of the cleanup is expected to be lower than that of Paris’s efforts to clean the Seine, as Rome is starting from a lower level of pollution.
