Rigopiano Disaster: Former Pescara Prefect’s Sentence Finalized.
Rome: A sentence of one year and eight months for the former prefect of Pescara, Francesco Provolo, for the January 2017 Rigopiano disaster that killed 29 people became definitive Tuesday after a final ruling by the supreme Court of Cassation. The court confirmed Provolo’s suspended sentence in relation to the tragic event that occurred in the Abruzzo mountain village, where an avalanche overwhelmed a hotel on January 18, 2017, resulting in the loss of 29 lives.
According to Ansa News Agency, Provolo was found guilty of refusal to perform official duties and forgery. His conviction highlights the accountability expected of officials in the wake of disasters. Meanwhile, the supreme Court has ordered a second appeal for six individuals, all managers of the Abruzzo Region at the time of the disaster, who had been acquitted in the two previous levels of judgment. These developments mark a significant turn in the legal proceedings surrounding the Rigopiano tragedy, as the search for justice continues for those af
fected by the disaster.
