Puglia Mayor Bans Walking in Bathing Suit or Bare-Chested

Gallipoli: A Puglia mayor on Tuesday banned walking in a bathing costume or bare-chested in the historic town centre. The mayor of Gallipoli, Stefano Minerva, has implemented this new ordinance to ensure public decorum in the city.

According to Ansa News Agency, the ordinance specifically prohibits walking in a bathing suit or bare-chested, except in designated bathing areas and on Corso Roma. Additionally, entering municipal offices in shorts and a tank top is now forbidden. The aim is to address behaviors that are considered contrary to the principles of education and morality, as noted by the mayor.

The ban will remain in effect until September 30, 2025. Non-compliance with these rules could lead to fines ranging from a minimum of 25 euros to a maximum of 125 euros. This ordinance is not a new measure for Gallipoli; similar restrictions have been enforced in the past during the summer months. This year, however, the ordinance was issued earlier following numerous reports and evidence of tourists walking inappropriately dressed in the historic center.
