Prison Overcrowding in Italy Deemed Unsustainable by President Mattarella

Rome: Prison overcrowding in Italy is now unsustainable, President Sergio Mattarella said Monday amid an upsurge in inmate suicides linked to over-packed cells, poor conditions, and under-staffing.

According to Ansa News Agency, President Mattarella addressed the Head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration and a delegation from the Penitentiary Police at the Quirinale. He emphasized the challenging and multifaceted nature of their functions, which extend beyond surveillance. Mattarella acknowledged the daily commitment of these officials, which is made increasingly difficult by the current critical state of the prison system marked by severe overcrowding.

Mattarella stressed that prisons should not become breeding grounds for crime. He stated that detention facilities must focus on the rehabilitation of offenders rather than becoming places that foster hopelessness or further criminal activity. The President highlighted that successfully rehabilitating prisoners not only contributes to community s
ecurity but also fulfills a constitutional goal.
