Alcaraz Questions Fognini’s Wimbledon Farewell After Thrilling Match
London: Carlo Alcaraz paid tribute to Fabio Fognini after being pushed all the way by the Italian veteran in their first-round match, telling reporters he didn’t understand why it should be the Imperia man’s last Wimbledon at the age of 38. “I don’t understand why this is his last Wimbledon, he could play here for another three or four years. It was an honor to share the court with him. It was a great match,” said the 22-year-old five-time slam winner, who is bidding to become the first man since Bjorn Borg to do the Roland-Garros-Wimbledon double in successive years.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Spaniard prevailed in a five-set epic and almost as many hours of spectacular play. The crowd on the main court greeted the Italian’s exit with a long round of applause.
