Press Hails ‘His Majesty Sinner’ After Wimbledon Heroics

London: The Italian and international press paid tribute to world number one Jannik Sinner on Monday after he beat Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday to become the first Italian, male or female, to win a singles title at Wimbledon.

According to Ansa News Agency, “His Majesty Sinner,” read the front-page headline of sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, while Corriere dello Sport declared the 23-year-old “The King” and Tuttosport called him a “Legend”. Il Corriere della Sera declared on its front page that “Sinner makes history”. “The first Italian king of Wimbledon,” it continued. “‘It was my dream’.” Similarly, La Repubblica stated that “Sinner is in history – first Italian to win the trophy, Alcaraz beaten in 4 sets”. La Stampa crowned him “The King of the World”.

British newspaper The Guardian focused on Sinner’s ability to bounce back after his painful defeat to Alcaraz in the French Open final. “Sinner’s Redemption,” it said. “Italian grabs the glory in Wimbledon classic”. Photos of Sinner’s victory also featured on the front pages of Monday’s edition of The Times, The Washington Post and The New York Times, among others.
