President Sulyok: We Created the Possibility of Uniting Hungarians Across the Borders

Budapest: President Tam¡s Sulyok has highlighted how, fifteen years ago, “we created the possibility of uniting Hungarians across the borders”. Speaking in parliament on the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of new Hungarian citizens, the president said the National Assembly sworn in in 2010 granted rights to those who were entitled to them by default, but those rights had been taken away from them by Hungary’s turbulent history.

According to About Hungary, President Sulyok expressed that in 2010, a significant milestone was reached where the efforts for unity allowed the nation to become one in a public law context, as well as spiritually, intellectually, and culturally. He emphasized that every oath of citizenship taken by a compatriot is a nationwide celebration, marking the 15th anniversary of this unifying effort.

Addressing participants at the event, Deputy Prime Minister for national policy Zsolt Semj©n reinforced the message of unity, stating that there are no distinctions among citizens. “There are no category A and category B citizens, there is only one Hungarian nation and one Hungarian citizenship,” Semj©n said. He further noted that the Hungarian National Assembly reflects the political will of all Hungarians, including those living within Hungary, in the Carpathian Basin, and globally. This parliament represents all Hungarians, irrespective of historical circumstances, Semj©n added.
