Pope’s 10th Night in Hospital Went Well Says Vatican

Rome: Pope Francis’s 10th night in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital went well, the Vatican said on Monday. “The night went well; the Pope slept and is resting,” read a statement by the Vatican Press Office.

According to Ansa News Agency, on Sunday the Vatican said that the 88-year-old Argentine pontiff’s condition remained critical after he had respiratory crises on Saturday. The pope was admitted to the hospital on 14 February after experiencing breathing difficulties and was initially treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.

On Sunday, a medical bulletin said blood tests showed that the pope’s thrombocytopenia, which occurs when the platelet count in the blood is too low, is stable but revealed early, mild signs of kidney failure, adding that this is currently under control. The pontiff is continuing to receive high-flow oxygen therapy, the Vatican Press Office said. He is alert and well-oriented and the prognosis remains reserved, it said.
