Pope to Do Lenten Exercises ‘in Spiritual Communion’ Amid Hospitalization

Vatican City: The Vatican announced on Tuesday that the Roman Curia’s Lenten spiritual exercises are scheduled to commence on Sunday in the Paul VI Hall. These exercises will be held “in spiritual communion” with Pope Francis, who is currently receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital.

According to Ansa News Agency, the meditations for the Lenten exercises will be led by Father Roberto Pasolini, Preacher of the Pontifical Household. The theme for this year is ‘The hope of eternal life’. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni clarified that the theme “had been chosen beforehand and has no connection with the situation of these days”.

The decision to continue with the spiritual exercises without the Pope’s physical presence highlights the importance of the Lenten tradition within the Roman Curia. The exercises are an annual event aimed at fostering reflection and spiritual growth. Despite Pope Francis’s absence, the Vatican remains committed to upholding this significant religious observance.
