Pope Leo XIV Prepares Historic Trip to Iznik for Council Anniversary

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV announced plans to visit Iznik, the modern-day Turkish town that was once ancient Nicaea, in celebration of the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea. During a discussion with reporters on Monday, he confirmed the plans, stating, “we are preparing it,” in response to inquiries about fulfilling a commitment made by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

According to Ansa News Agency, the visit, if realized, will not only commemorate a pivotal moment in Christian history but also provide an opportunity for Pope Leo XIV to meet Patriarch Bartholomew, the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church. This meeting would mark a significant moment in fostering relations between the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions.
