Pope Francis’s Marble Tomb in Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

Vatican City: Pope Francis’s tomb has been made of Ligurian marble and only bears the inscription Franciscus, his name in Latin, the Vatican said Thursday. The tomb is set to host the body of Pope Francis next Saturday in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

According to Ansa News Agency, the tomb has been prepared in the niche of the side nave between the Cappella Paolina (Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani) and the Cappella Sforza of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The design is simple, adorned only with the inscription “FRANCISCUS” and a reproduction of his pectoral cross.

The tomb is located near the Altar of Saint Francis, as stated by the Press Office of the Holy See.
