Planet’s Climate Reaches Unprecedented Variability, Study Finds
Rome: Planet Earth’s climate has never experienced such variability, alternating between hot and cold periods, as revealed by a new study analyzing the critical thresholds of the last 66 million years. The research, led by Tommaso Alberti from Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), has been published in the Scientific Reports journal.
According to Ansa News Agency, the study indicates that climate tipping points manifest differently across Earth’s various geological periods. Alberti emphasized that “our work shows that climate tipping points do not show themselves with the same dynamics in the Earth’s different geological periods.”
The study co-author and INGV President Fabio Florindo highlighted that the current era is particularly vulnerable to minor disturbances caused by human activity. Florindo noted, “Our period is characterized by more ‘intermittent’ behavior compared to warm periods of the past, with faster transitions between different climate states.”
Florindo further pointed out the challenges posed by this increased variability, stating, “This variability makes it even more difficult to accurately predict the evolution of our climate and requires special attention in the study of tipping points.”
