Pavia Prison’s Condom Distribution Plan Halted by Italian Authorities

Pavia: Italy’s penitentiary administration department (DAP) announced on Wednesday that it has halted a plan by Pavia prison to distribute 720 condoms to inmates as a “therapeutic” measure. The department stated that it had not been consulted prior to the initiative and expressed concerns regarding potential risks to health, order, and security within the facility.

According to Ansa News Agency, the department highlighted several issues that could arise from the initiative. These included challenges related to “methods of control, the prevention of violent conduct among inmates,” and the “possible distorted use of condoms.” The DAP pointed out that condoms could potentially be used to conceal narcotic substances, including through ingestion, thus bypassing standard security controls.
