Palestinians Endure Harsh Conditions in Gaza, Says Pope Leo XIV

Vatican city: Pope Leo XIV expressed his sorrow at the conditions of Palestinian people in Gaza after Israel launched its offensive to take control of Gaza City and reiterated his appeal for a ceasefire and the release of the hostages held by Hamas at the end of his general audience in Saint Peter’s Square on Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the American pontiff stated, “I express my deepest sympathy to the Palestinian people in Gaza, who continue to live in fear and survive in unacceptable conditions, forced – once again – from their lands.” His remarks highlighted the dire situation faced by Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict.

Pope Leo XIV invoked the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” and emphasized that “every person always has an inviolable dignity, to be respected and protected.” He urged for “a ceasefire, for the release of the hostages, for a negotiated diplomatic solution, and for full respect for international humanitarian law.” Furthermore, he invited the faithful to pray for peace, hoping that “a dawn of peace and justice may soon rise.”
