Owner Falls 7 Meters on Construction Site and Dies

San vitaliano: The latest in a long spate of fatal workplace accidents in Italy occurred Friday morning in San Vitaliano, in the Naples area, where a 68-year-old construction company owner died after falling from a height of over seven meters. The man was carrying out an inspection at a construction site near a gas station. The victim was named as Vincenzo Bolero, 68, a surveyor from Marigliano near Naples.

According to Ansa News Agency, the accident came after another work-related death on Wednesday when a 46-year-old Slovenian worker was run over and killed by a truck in the yard of the Acciaierie Venete steel plant in Borgo Valsugana, Trentino. This followed five worker deaths last week, highlighting the ongoing issue of workplace safety in the country.

Workplace deaths are a major problem in Italy and Premier Giorgia Meloni’s government has stated that boosting health and safety is a priority. Work-related deaths in Italy rose by one last year to 1,202, the workplace accident and occupational illness insurance agency INAIL reported in its annual report in July.

President Sergio Mattarella emphasized on Tuesday that Italy must never resign itself to accepting workplace deaths. He conveyed this message to the chairwoman of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Working Conditions in Italy for the States General conference on Occupational Health and Safety.
