Opposition Demands Premier Meloni Address Parliament on Gaza Situation

Rome: Italy’s two biggest opposition groups, the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and the 5-Star Movement (M5S), have called on Premier Giorgia Meloni to address parliament following Israel’s military actions in Gaza City. The opposition is urging Meloni to clarify the government’s stance and actions regarding the situation in Gaza.

According to Ansa News Agency, M5S Lower House whip Riccardo Ricciardi emphasized the need for transparency from the government. “We demand that Meloni come to the Chamber with some statements, and a vote in black and white on what the government wants to do,” Ricciardi stated. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current communication, criticizing Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s statements as inadequate.

Ricciardi further highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “Gaza is dying today and all the Western and European values are dying with it.” He accused the government of either being complicit or inadequate in their response. Ricciardi warned that history would judge those who fail to act, saying, “With your actions, you have buried pages of history, and when future generations ask us how we turned a blind eye to this genocide, we will tell them this is how it is done.”
