NYE Firework Injuries Surge to Decade High in Italy

ROME: The number of people injured by fireworks during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Italy has reached its highest level in a decade, according to a report from the interior ministry released Tuesday night. A total of 309 individuals suffered injuries, a substantial increase from previous years, with 69 requiring hospitalization.

According to Ansa News Agency, minors were significantly affected, with 90 young individuals ending up in the hospital, compared to 64 the previous year. Despite the increase in injuries, no fatalities were reported, continuing the trend of recent years.

In response to the heightened injuries, authorities conducted extensive checks across the country. Approximately 28,200 individuals were scrutinized, resulting in 146 arrests and 520 citations, as reported by the Viminale. New security measures were implemented in seven major cities, including the first test of ‘red zones’ in Milan, where over 2,000 checks were performed, and 50 people were removed from the area.

However, the security measures have not been without controversy. Italy’s criminal lawyers have voiced concerns, arguing that the crackdown on fireworks and associated festivities infringes on basic freedoms. The debate continues as officials balance public safety with civil liberties.
