New Orleans Terror Attack Prompts Italian President’s Condolences to Biden

ROME: Italian President Sergio Mattarella extended his condolences to U.S. President Joe Biden following a tragic incident in New Orleans where a pickup truck plowed into a crowd, resulting in at least 15 fatalities and numerous injuries. The FBI has categorized the event as an “act of terrorism,” marking a somber start to the New Year.

According to Ansa News Agency, President Mattarella expressed his dismay and sorrow in a message to President Biden, highlighting the shared pain felt in Italy over the attack’s consequences. He noted that the Italian people join in mourning those who lost loved ones and wish for the swift recovery of the injured.

Mattarella emphasized Italy’s steadfast commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, underpinned by shared values of civility, democracy, and respect for human life with the United States. He conveyed the deepest condolences from both himself and the Italian Republic, emphasizing Italy’s solidarity with the American people during this time of distress.

In his message, Mattarella also looked forward to welcoming President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden to Rome from January 9 to January 12. During their visit, the Bidens are scheduled to meet with Pope Francis, President Mattarella, and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, fostering diplomatic relations amid a backdrop of shared grief and resolve against terrorism.
