Not Quake That Kills But House Says Ciciliano
Naples: It is not the earthquake directly that kills people but the house that collapses onto them, Italian Civil Protection chief Fabio Ciciliano said Thursday. He emphasized that residents in the Naples area, which experienced a concerning but not very damaging quake early Thursday, would receive assistance through ongoing assessments of the safety and quake-proofness of their buildings.
According to Ansa News Agency, Ciciliano reiterated that the major concern regarding the Campi Flegrei or Phlegraean Fields area is the urbanization and the quality of the buildings. He noted that citizens can already request free inspections by technicians to verify the vulnerability of homes, which is different from habitability.
Ciciliano highlighted that a study on the buildings of the Phlegraean Fields has already been initiated. This important work aims to help citizens understand the level of quality and safety of the homes they live in.
