New Literary and Cultural Park Unveiled at Virgil and Leopardi Tombs in Naples

Naples: Italian officials, including Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli and director of Italian museums Massimo Osanna, unveiled a new literary and cultural park in Naples, where the tombs of esteemed poets Virgil and Giacomo Leopardi are located.

According to Ansa News Agency, Virgil, renowned as one of the greatest Ancient Roman poets, is celebrated for his monumental work, the Aeneid, which narrates the epic journey of Trojan hero Aeneas to the region where Rome was eventually established. His tomb has long been traditionally located in Naples, marking the city as a significant cultural site.

Leopardi, Italy’s greatest Romantic poet, is considered the most important Italian poet after Dante. He spent the final years of his life in Naples, and his burial in the southern port city further cements Naples’ literary significance.

Giuli expressed that the park is a tribute to “two giants of our literature” and emphasized Naples’ unique position as a city that encapsulates the pinnacle of Italian literature, history, tradition, and culture.

Osanna highlighted the celebratory nature of the unveiling, asserting that the park serves as a gift to the local community, Naples, and Italy as a whole. He described the site as “among the most emblematic of our culture,” bringing together the tombs of Virgil and Leopardi in a manner that honors their legacies.

The project’s enhancements include the restoration of the tombs, garden improvements, and the introduction of an “archaeological and botanical path” designed for accessibility. The use of QR codes ensures that everyone, including those with visual impairments and cognitive challenges, can access information, making it “a beautiful 360-degree accessibility project.”
