Musk Applauds Meloni on Judicial Reform

Rome: Elon Musk on Monday commented with a “Bravo!” on the post of an X user, Mario Nawfal, who highlighted that Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is advocating for a reform to separate the career paths of judges and prosecutors.

According to Ansa News Agency, Nawfal stated that “PM Giorgia Meloni is pushing a historic reform to split judges from prosecutors, arguing it will speed up trials and make the system more impartial.” Nawfal highlighted the inefficiency of Italy’s courts, noting that cases take significantly longer than the EU average. He also pointed out that judges and prosecutors have historically operated as an unaccountable political force.

In a related incident last year, Musk criticized Rome judges on his platform X for annulling the detention of migrants, leading to a response from Italian President Sergio Mattarella. Musk’s post, which stated “these judges need to go,” followed a court decision to suspend the detention of seven migrants.

Premier Giorgia Meloni, leader of the Brothers of Italy party, and Musk have shown mutual admiration. Recently, Italy’s Lower House approved the first of several votes needed for a bill to separate prosecutors and judges’ career paths. This bill also proposes a high court to discipline the judiciary and changes to the judiciary’s self-governing body, the CSM.

The judiciary’s union has announced a strike against the reform, arguing it threatens the autonomy of magistrates and aims to place prosecutors under executive control.
