1,300 More Migrant Expulsions in 2024 Says Piantedosi

Rome: Migrant expulsions from Italy increased by 1,300 or 15-20% last year compared to 2022, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced on Monday. This marks the third consecutive year of a rise in expulsions, as authorities strive to address the challenges of irregular immigration.

According to Ansa News Agency, Piantedosi emphasized the need for more robust measures, stating, “They are still not enough, we should do more, but compared to 2022, last year there were 1,300 more expulsions, 1,300 potential factors of insecurity for our citizens. We should do more.” His comments were made during the opening of the conference of Italian prefects and police chiefs at the Higher School of Interior Administration, focusing on guidelines for policies to combat irregular immigration.

The conference, attended by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, underscores the Italian government’s commitment to strengthening immigration control measures. The increase in expulsions is seen as a necessary step towards enhancing national security and addressing public concerns regarding irregular immigration.
