Mum of Italian Aid Worker Held in Venezuela Criticizes Government’s Silence

Rome: The mother of Alberto Trentini, an Italian aid worker detained in Venezuela on charges of conspiracy since November 15, has voiced her frustration over Premier Giorgia Meloni’s alleged lack of response regarding her son’s situation.

According to Ansa News Agency, Armanda Trentini expressed her concerns outside a Rome court, where a hearing was held for the trial in absentia of four Egyptian security officials accused of torturing Italian student Giulio Regeni to death in 2016. She highlighted the distress caused by the government’s silence, particularly since her son has been imprisoned for eight months.

Trentini urged the Italian government to take proactive measures, similar to those of the Swiss government, which successfully secured the release of her son’s fellow prisoner. The released prisoner reportedly shared with the press the harsh conditions of detention that Alberto continues to endure.
