Milan Mayor Sala Satisfied with San Siro Stadium Sale Approval

Milan: Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala expressed satisfaction following the city assembly’s vote to approve the sale of the San Siro stadium site to football clubs AC Milan and Inter. The decision came after an extensive 12-hour session, resulting in 24 votes in favor and 20 against the proposal.

According to Ansa News Agency, the vote revealed notable divisions within the assembly. Seven councillors from Sala’s own centre-left coalition voted against the sale. Meanwhile, one councillor from the centre-right opposition abstained from voting, and the Forza Italia representatives were largely absent, except for one member who defied the party line. Mayor Sala emphasized the importance of preparation and maintaining calm in the lead-up to the vote, stating that he refrained from pressuring assembly members, recognizing the divisive nature of the issue.

Mayor Sala noted that the San Siro decision was expected to be contentious, acknowledging that divisions arose within both the ruling majority and the opposing minority. However, he expressed confidence in the council’s decision, stating, “We believe we did the right thing, and the council has made its decision.” The approval marks a significant step forward in the future of the iconic stadium site.
