Messina: The Sicilian village of Zafferia near Messina on Sunday was invaded by mud and debris after a stream overflowed its banks during a storm peltering the area, leaving residents trapped in their homes.
According to Ansa News Agency, water submerged streets after the Zafferia stream overflowed its banks and firefighters were working to help stranded drivers, local rescue services said. The rainstorm that hit Messina on Sunday, particularly affected the southern area of the Sicilian city, also flooding part of the local hospital’s ER, health authorities reported.
In the Furci Siculo area of Messina, Mayor Matteo Francilia and local councillor Agatino Pistone were involved in rescuing a car driver who became trapped in a flooded underpass. The driver was safely taken back home by firefighters who subsequently closed the state road between the areas of Grotte and Calcare, where another stream, the Savoca, had overflown its banks.
