Mercitalia Worker Fatally Struck by Train Near Reggio Emilia

RUBIERO: A railway worker has died after being struck by a train in Rubiero, near Reggio Emilia, prompting an investigation by local authorities into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. The employee, who was working for Mercitalia, a subsidiary of Italy’s State-controlled railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), was killed on Wednesday night.

According to Ansa News Agency, preliminary investigations suggest that the man was walking along the tracks to reach the station after completing his work shift. Investigative sources indicate that he may have inadvertently gotten too close to the tracks, resulting in him being hit by a regional train.

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini expressed “deep sorrow” over the incident. In a statement issued by the transport ministry late Wednesday, Salvini offered his condolences and called for a detailed report on the incident. The Carabinieri police are leading the investigation as they seek to understand how the accident occurred.
