MEP Ilaria Salis Seeks Trial in Italy Over Hungarian Allegations

Brussels: Italian MEP Ilaria Salis has publicly declared her desire to face trial in Italy concerning allegations of her involvement in an attack on far-right militants in Hungary. This statement followed a narrow decision by the European Parliament, which upheld Salis’s parliamentary immunity by a single vote after Hungarian authorities requested its removal to enable her trial in Hungary.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salis, a member of the Green-Left Alliance (AVS), expressed her frustration on the social media platform X, questioning whether Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio would respond to her situation. She emphasized her commitment to facing justice, countering claims that she intends to avoid legal proceedings. Salis insisted that as an Italian citizen, her request to be tried in Italy is straightforward and remains unchanged, emphasizing the importance of Italy’s democratic constitutional guarantees.

Salis further criticized the notion of being tried in what she described as a “regime” and asserted that her trial could proceed immediately within Italy without hindrance from her European parliamentary immunity. Her statements highlight a complex legal and political issue involving cross-border judicial processes and the protection of parliamentary immunity within the European Union.
